Performance Improvement of a Hydraulic Active/Passive Heave Compensation Winch Using Semi Secondary Motor Control: Experimental and Numerical Verific…
2020
In this paper, a newly developed controller for active heave compensated offshore cranes is compared with state-of-the-art control methods. The comparison is divided into a numerical part on stability margins as well as operational windows and an experimental validation of the expected performance improvement based on a full-scale testing on site with a crane rated to 250 metric tons. Such a crane represents the typical target for the new control method using a combination of active and passive hydraulic actuation on the main winch. The active hydraulic actuation is a hydrostatic transmission with variable-displacement pumps and variable-displacement motors. The new controller employs feedf…

Improved resource allocation strategy in SU-CoMP network
2011
Coordinated multi-point transmission and reception (CoMP) for single user, named as SU-CoMP, is considered as an efficient approach to mitigate inter-cell interference in orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems. Two prevalent approaches in SU-CoMP are coordinated scheduling (CS) and joint processing (JP). Although JP in SU-CoMP has been proved to achieve a great link performance improvement for the cell-edge user, efficient resource allocation (RA) on the system level is quite needed. However, so far limited work has been done considering JP, and most existing schemes achieved the improvement of cell-edge performance at cost of the cell-average performance degradation …
Deep multimodal fusion for semantic image segmentation: A survey
2021
International audience; Recent advances in deep learning have shown excellent performance in various scene understanding tasks. However, in some complex environments or under challenging conditions, it is necessary to employ multiple modalities that provide complementary information on the same scene. A variety of studies have demonstrated that deep multimodal fusion for semantic image segmentation achieves significant performance improvement. These fusion approaches take the benefits of multiple information sources and generate an optimal joint prediction automatically. This paper describes the essential background concepts of deep multimodal fusion and the relevant applications in compute…
Multi-rate PID Controller for a Networked Control System
2007
In networked control systems several devices (controller, process and others) share a common communication bus. This feature can suppose delays when those devices try to transmit information through the unique bus, leading to a non- regular behaviour, that is, different variables are sampled and updated in a non-uniform way along the time. As a result, if the control system is designed by means of classical design techniques, control performance can be degraded, since these techniques used not to consider those delays. In order to undertake this problem, a solution based on a PID controller's parameters readjustment is proposed. This approach permits to retune these parameters depending on …
Definition of a laboratory optimization protocol for road bitumen improved with recycled tire rubber
2012
Abstract Bearing in mind the need to answer one of the most frequent needs for civil construction, in general, and major project such as road infrastructures in particular, this paper presents the results of a laboratory experimental study in order to evaluate the performance improvement that is possible to achieve when modifying road bitumen with CRM (Crumb Rubber Modifier) from discarded tire rubber (TR), using a Wet Process. The environmental advantage is double, since the aim of the research is to obtain high performance road bitumen thanks to the re-use of a discarded material, such as the rubber tires, which otherwise would be dumped in scrap-yard. In particular, this experimental stu…

Wireless energy and information transmission in FSO and RF-FSO links
2018
We propose and analyze a wireless energy and information transmission scheme in free-space optical (FSO) links. The results are presented for both quasi-static and fast-fading conditions. We derive closed-form expressions for throughput, outage probability, and optimal power allocation optimizing the system throughput/outage probability. Finally, we complement the FSO link with an additional radio frequency (RF) link to create a hybrid RF-FSO system and reduce the system outage probability. The results show that joint implementation of the RF and FSO links leads to considerable performance improvement, compared to the cases with only FSO-based communication.
Adaptation of elaborated feedback in e-learning
2008
Design of feedback is a critical issue of online assessment development within Web-based Learning Systems (WBLSs). In our work we demonstrate the possibilities of tailoring the feedback to the students’ learning style (LS), certitude in response and its correctness. We observe in the experimental studies that these factors have a significant influence on the feedback preferences of students and the effectiveness of elaborated feedback (EF), i.e. students’ performance improvement during the test. These observations helped us to develop a simple EF recommendation approach. Our experimental study shows that (1) many students are eager to follow the recommendations on necessity to read certain …
Beyond robust design: an example of synergy between statistics and advanced engineering design
2002
Higher efficiency and effectiveness of Research & Development phases can be attained using advanced statistical methodologies. In this work statistical methodologies are combined with a deterministic approach to engineering design. In order to show the potentiality of such integration, a simple but effective example is presented. It concerns the problem of optimising the performance of a paper helicopter. The desgin of this simple device is not new in quality engineering literature and has been mainly used for educational purposes. Taking full advantage of fundamental engineering knowledge, an aerodynamic model is originally formulated in order to describe the fligh of the helicopter. S…
